The Amen Break  [ Edit ]

Nate Harrison has posted a great discussion of sampling, breakbeats, and copyright on his website. It takes the form of a fairly large (34 MB) MPEG-4 video which is visually not very exciting (the discussion is in the form of installation art), but the audio is very interesting. He contends that the so-called “Amen Break”, one of the most sampled beats of all time, is a good starting point to talk about the history of sampling, and I agree. Check it out. It’s a good introduction to sampling for those who don’t really know about it, and still instructive for those who do.
