The Chosen
**** Put simply, Chaim Potok writes about two boys and their fathers. More accurately (and longer), he tells the story of Reuven Malter, a teenage orthodox Jew living in Brooklyn just after World War II. The story follows him and another boy: Danny Saunders, a hasidic (extremely orthodox) Jew. They are both Jewish, but their worlds are very different. Still, they become great friends, and Potok takes us through their trials and tribulations from the beginning of high school through the end of college. This story is all in the details. The plot is relatively uncomplicated, but the relationships among Reuven, Danny, and their fathers are intricate, interesting, and heartfelt. Lisa thinks it may be one of the best books she's read, and I too recommend it highly. We read this one together (it's the 9th time or something probably for her), and we're continuing on to the sequel, The Promise, right now.Posted by Joe on October 20, 2001 09:50 PM
