The Satanic Verses
*** by Salman Rushdie. I happened to start reading this on Sept 11, which is an odd thing to do when the book starts off with a plane crash, and deals a lot with Islamic mythology and its origins. I liked the book a lot, but I am still confused by it somewhat. The writing is very well crafted and I did find it an enjoyable read. I also liked reading along with some annotations on the web that explain a lot of the references that I would have missed otherwise. However, I do still feel like I'm missing something. The book has so many references and seems to crticize parts of Islam (or all religions it would seem) that I feel like there must be some larger point that he is trying to make, or some kind of discussion, but I'm having trouble finding it. And in the end, maybe it is just a story, and nothing more. If anyone else has read it, I'd love to hear some comments.Posted by evan on November 14, 2001 02:05 PM

This book was recommended to me many months ago by someone who was sitting next to me on a plane from the east coast to the west. I still haven't read it, but seeing this makes me think I probably should check it out, so I will once I finish the three (yes three) books I'm reading right now.

Maybe he thinks we care? By the way, I did a Google search on his email address. The page you get gives his phone number, if you want to give him a call.
