Welcome!

Hello, and thanks for dropping by my website! I'm Lisa Chellman, a Chicago-area youth services librarian and (agented but as yet unpublished) writer of middle grade and young adult fiction.

While you're here, please check out (and, if you like it, subscribe to) my blog, where I ruminate on children's books, librarianship, and writing. You may also want to check out my lists of favorite books and other resources.

Two New Publication Opportunities

In the past 24 hours, I've learned about two different publication opportunities for writers who would like to get some work out there and for whom payment is not a concern.

  1. Leila at Bookshelves of Doom is starting a fiction chapbook-style magazine, TBR Tallboy. Here's what she's looking for:

I'm looking for short fiction (from 500 - 5,000 words) of any genre geared towards middle grade readers on up through the crossover YA/adult audience -- basically the stuff I enjoy reading and what I think a lot of the people who frequent this blog enjoy reading.

Authors will be compensated with a free issue of the magazine. The first submission deadline is March 31, 2009. More info here!

  2. Love, Wide Open is an "artistic anthology" to benefit Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). Here's the basic scoop:

Beginning January 1, 2009, we will be accepting poetry, short fiction, non-fiction, essays, art, and photography. Submissions will be open until June 30, 2009... All word-based submissions should be 8,000 words or less, and visual artists should be aware that their work will be scaled to fit the page... All submissions should focus on helping people, especially parents, accept the orientation and sexual identity of their gay, lesbian, bisexual, gender variant or questioning children.
