:: Great Search List ::

I wonder if you knew that I host a great movie list (which also features a strange photograph) and rules for Euchre for two players. As of this writing, searching on those terms in google gives you this site as number 1. As I've mentioned before, it amuses me to look at the things people have searched for when they click my site. At least these are things you'd really find here. They're also among the top searches, with great movie list being number 1.

I look through the search strings once every couple of months. Why? I'm a nerd. Looking through the search strings from this month, I'm not seeing much that amuses me. Everything looks too serious. Most hits are from people either looking for movie stuff, book stuff (especially to research/cheat on papers and tests), handkerchief stuff (thanks, Erin), and other things that just aren't very funny.

Of course, there are a few:

  • dachshund meaning DNA
  • elephant hiding picture
  • goody goody heh heh
  • how to fool a MRI look like your hurt
  • how to make my own at home goldteeth
  • how to motivate a teenage boy
  • napoleon sleeve wipe
  • stuffing his pants
  • what do you do when reality exceeds your dreams
  • yam kipper

Keep in mind these are things people searched for, and actually clicked to look at the page. I wonder what a yam kipper tastes like. Eeeew.

I think we need more searches on things like frumpy flop flower farming. Maybe I can make this page take over the Livejournal page, which current tops Google for that search.

Looking at your search strings is good fun. For some time I was the #1 site for 'Kelly Clarkson's ass'. Untold #s of people have hit my site looking for pictures of said butt only to be sorely disappointed. You know you look more than every couple months. Admit it.

Everyone knows that chellman.org is the *real* number 1 site for Kelly Clarkson's ass.

Actually, I think it probably has been about two months since I last looked. When I first discovered this, I was definitely looking every month. I might start again.

So, how do you lookup the search strings that are hitting your site?

You have to have access to your web server logs. Since you're at U of M, you might have a hard time getting those.

But, if you can get them, you run them through a stats analyzer like Webalizer, awstats, or other similar software. They look for "referrer" sites (the site someone was on when they clicked a link to yours) that were search engines, and usually those referrer URLs contain the search terms they used.

That's it. Server logs are almost always part of regular hosting packages, so if you were to move your site from umich to an inexpensive pay-for web host, you could see the logs.
