Back in September I posted about the Kryptonite lock exchange program, through which you could swap your lock for a new one that doesn’t use a tube key (and was openable with a Bic pen).
Well, a few months later, I got my replacement. I was pretty impressed with the process once it got rolling, which took most of the few months. I submitted my form, and periodically (every three or four weeks) received an email telling me they were going through the submissions, and would be sending out call tags for the locks pretty soon.
Once I got my email for the call tag and shipped my lock back, it was two days until I had the new one. I was kind of bowled over by the speed, but I’m happy to have the replacement. I can’t say that I feel like my bike is impossible to steal now, especially after reading about how fast professional lock pickers can work locks, but I feel better than before.
Carly was sick this morning, but I didn’t know it at first. She got up abruptly at 8 or so this morning, a little earlier than we were ready for. She paced around, put her front paws on the bed as she likes to do (she’s not allowed on the bed, but she is allowed to prop herself up), paced around some more. Finally I got out of bed, opened the door wider so she knew she could get out. She just looked at me, and kept pacing. So I shoved her out, not wanting to listen to tick-tick-tick while we tried to sleep a little longer. She busted the door open with her schnoz. She’s been known to do this when she’s starved for attention, so I shoved her out again, and shut the door securely.
At that point, she started jogging from end to end of the apartment, whining. After six laps, I caved in. Within seconds of getting outside, she blew up. Boy, what I responsible parent I had been, not listening to her (now I realize) obvious plea for help. I cleaned up the mess after we walked around some more and I brought her back inside, found her bland dog food. She’s been sprightly and fine the rest of the day, so it’s no big deal, but I felt really bad for trying to ignore her in her time of trouble. Our dog may behave badly at times, but she was good enough to wait until we got outside, and I’m very proud of her.
I’m glad she wasn’t so sick as to make us cancel our Valentine’s Day (observed) plan to go to Lula. We had a fine brunch, saw several friends there (1, 2, 3, 4), and had a generally lovely day. Let’s hope the dog is feeling better tomorrow.

This weekend has been nice. Lisa’s parents came out for a couple days, and we went to the Shedd Aquarium yesterday for the first time in a little while. Things are being shuffled around a lot there, and they have some new critters like the caiman lizard in this photo. We saved some money on admission using a museum pass from the public library. Chicago peeps, if you aren’t taking advantage of this program, you really should be. I know it’s called Great Kids, but it can be used by anyone. Be aware that the passes get you different kinds of admission at different museums — this took us by surprise yesterday. Know before you go.
I demonstrated the depth of my commitment to music (or possibly my lack of proper priorities) by leaving Lisa and the family at Margie’s, not having eaten any ice cream sundae goodness, to make my gig at the Charleston on time. Fortunately, the gig was fun, so I don’t have any major regrets. It’s always hard to leave Margie’s, though, there’s no denying it.
By the way, I have been wondering why there haven’t been any comments on this site in a while. If you’ve tried to comment and something hasn’t worked, let me know. I had some stuff installed here that might have made commenting too hard (or even impossible), but it’s gone now. If you just don’t have anything to say, that’s different.

Two years ago today, we got our first dog, Carly. In the past two years, we’ve gone through a lot together: gentle leaders, private training, Charm School, squirrel hunting missions, lounging on the couch, running around on the beach, and of course lots of photos.
This dog has snuggled and flailed her way into our hearts. Happy Adoption Day, dum dum.
(This glamour shot was taken by Carly’s, and my, favorite human, who has a redesigned website, by the way.)
